FCT Police Apprehend Woman for Abandoning One-Day-Old Baby in Abuja

The Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has arrested a woman for allegedly abandoning her one-day-old baby in a bush path in the Mpape area of Abuja.

According to a statement released by Police Public Relations Officer SP Josephine Adeh on Sunday, the baby was found wrapped in a cloth near Crush Rock, behind an unfinished Red Bricks Market, on January 3.

Responding to a distress call, operatives from the Mpape Division’s Juvenile and Women Care Section (JWC) immediately rushed to the scene and rescued the newborn. The baby was then taken to Mpape Primary Health Care Center, where medical staff confirmed the infant’s stable condition.

Adeh revealed that following a tip-off from the community, the mother of the child was located and arrested. During interrogation, she admitted to abandoning the baby, citing her inability to care for the child after her husband reportedly left her.

The police spokesperson condemned the abandonment of the child and expressed the command’s determination to protect vulnerable members of society.

The baby will be handed over to the Department of Social Welfare for proper care, while the mother is expected to face prosecution under the Child Rights Act (CRA), 2003, upon completion of investigations.

Adeh praised the public for their swift action, which contributed to the successful rescue, and urged FCT residents to continue reporting suspicious activities and emergencies to the police.
